FOCUS youth participants are 18 to 24 year olds who have aged out of foster care without strong family or community connections. Each youth participant chooses a team of up to 3 adults to guide and support them as they navigate independence and adulthood.
As individual coaches and as a team, your job is to listen to the young person, be curious and eager to discover who they are, help them define and pursue their concrete goals and limitless dreams.
Transitioning to young adulthood is challenging for most people, even those with ample support and resources. Young people who have been through the foster care system have often experienced trauma, abuse, and neglect. You will receive ongoing guidance and training from FOCUS staff to understand and respond to the unique needs of foster youth.
You need to be 21+.
You need to pass background checks.
You need to be able to devote 15 hours per month to building and sustaining your relationships with co-team members and the young person you support.
You do not need prior experience working with youth. Anyone is welcome to join a team: businesspeople, health care workers, cultural and community leaders, tradespeople, students, artists, coaches, teachers, food service workers, people from faith communities, and more.
